Most people, at one time or another, have "simply had enough" with a social problem in our society. But how many of us are actually willing to go and do something about it? These everyday Americans did! Each channeled their frustration and passion into a solution. Now their ideas are turning the corner on poverty, crime, at-risk youth, housing shortages and neighborhood decay. In fact, these successful social inventions created by a new trend of "social entrepreneurs" are "civic-franchising" across America, perhaps even right in your backyard! The Power of ONE reveals the stories of 35 people who didn't give up and are now changing millions of lives!
"I really enjoyed your book! I need to order 10 copies for my staff right away."
Bruce Gunter, Executive Director, Progressive Redevelopment (Past Finance Director, Habitat for Humanity International)
Based upon her eight years of interviews from coast to coast, Debra Berg has uncovered over 100 ground-breaking solutions including "the story behind the story" of the business owner who came up with the Amber Alert program. Debra documents 26 of the best that cure everything from poverty to pedophiles and cybercrime to gang bangers. These solutions comprise more than simple community service projects. They're actual cures!

What's the Difference Between A "Mission" and a "Vision" Statement?
by Jerr Boschee
More than one nonprofit Board member has approached me in recent months after a briefing session or a retreat, perplexed by the same topic. Their questions frequently come down to this: What is the difference between vision and mission — and why is the difference so important?
Some nonprofits have both a vision statement and a mission statement. Some have only one statement and try to cover the waterfront. But almost all the nonprofits I encounter make a fundamental mistake: They think their vision statement should be about themselves.
Take the nonprofit serving the elderly I worked with not so long ago in the Southwest. Here were the vision and mission statements they showed me when I first arrived:
• VISION: “We are a nationally recognized, compassionate organization offering quality human services through disciplined growth and community partnerships.”
• MISSION: “We enhance quality of life by providing comprehensive services that empower people to maintain their independence and dignity.”
You Have the
Power of ONE
You can be the important difference
right where you live!
Learn what others now know about solving the many precursors to and spin-offs of poverty and crime. These ideas work because they're effective, compassionate, and save taxpayers billions!
We think there should be more of them! Entrepreneurial thinking and innovation is behind it. Discover the inside story about these amazing missions from the hands-on experts on this site.

Virginia Tech Doesn't Have to Happen Again!
Terry Modglin, executive director of Youth Crime Watch of America, says that "The massive tragedy at Virginia Tech continues to raise the awareness of the safety of our young people that require enforcement, intervention, and most of all prevention." Modglin suggests five key things students can do to make themselves safer:
Be aware of your surroundings
Recognize people or things that are out of the ordinary
Reach out to sutendents who are under intense emotional stress who may become a threat to themselves or others
If you're not sure, report it
Be sure to share this information with your peers
YCWA has a division called College Crime Watch, which focuses on student leaders in concert to prevent campus violence.

Waiting on the World
to Change
Me and all my friends
We're all misunderstood
They say we stand for nothing
There's no way we ever could
Now we see everything is going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don't have the means
To rise above and beat it
So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
Its hard to be persistant
When we're standing at a distance
So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
Now if we had the power
To bring our neighbors home from war
They would've never missed a Christmas
No more ribbons on the door
When you trust your television
What you get is what you got
Cuz when when the only information ooohhh,
They can bend it all they want
So while we're waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
It's not that we don't care
We just know that the the fight ain't fair
So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We're still waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
One day our generation
Is gonna rule the population
So we keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
Know we keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
Waiting on the world to change
Waiting on the world to change
Waiting on the world to change.
